Score items have been formulated following a method suggested by Krosnick (2009) called the "back-to-front"approach. Such an approach systematically explores all paths in a testquestionnaire to identify all simple sets of ordered questions and then reducesall the possible paths to one set. The final score is then obtained by summingup the responses to the score items arranged in order with the highest scorebeing the one with the best usability. The initial score items were thenclarified and adapted based on Birkinshaw "Rash frame" of usability alternatives and the "back-to-front"approach". A set of items (v1.0) was then developed for the scoringof the usability items following a "back-to-front" approach.
Each of the score items has been grounded in specific usability problems sothese identified problems are the most common problems reported in theliterature where the usability heuristics can be applied. Examples of compiledqueries have been tested on the iPhone and illustrated in the workshop "“liquidacion” of the Nielsen's usability heuristics", held in Spainin March-May 2011. The development of the new set of score items has been, then, discussed among the authors, and it enabled a preliminary evaluationof the preliminary checklist items. Another major discussion among theauthors concerned the degree of agreement between the different heuristics. Some of the authors of this article were further involved during therating of quality of the application. These were: Sérgio Salazar, NelsonRios, Ana Maria Blondin, Christian Maynach, Maria João Botelho, AntonioLago, and Miguel Martins. The authors has come to a consensus that each elicitedapplication, most of the times, represents a single best practice, whichwould justify the adoption of this one single measure of quality design. But there should be further elements assessed, like the usability andarchitectural elements of the application.
