One of the big draws on the Audible platform is their sales. They often have deeply discounted titles two-for-one promotions. Premium Plus members can still participate in sales by logging on to Audible.com from a mobile or desktop browser. However, sale purchasing is no longer supported in the Audible for Android app on the Google Play Store. Audible told Good e-Reader that customers can simply download the Audible App on the Amazon App Store or for the Samsung Galaxy App Store and have full access to buy single audiobook titles and pay using a debit or credit card.
Obviously regular Audible users are going to be disgruntled about all of the new changes to Android. This OS was the last bastion of hope, after all of the audiobook and ebook companies disabled in-app purchasing on Apple devices over a decade ago. If you want to look at all of the new changes, Audible launched Support page, that answers most questions about the new changes. If you are a regular user, you should check it out.
Incase you are wondering, this is not a purely Audible thing. Many audiobook and ebook companies are also changing their Android apps. Yesterday, Barnes and Noble announced they are disabling in-app purchases for all audiobooks and ebooks on April 2nd. You will no longer to be able to buy anything and it will basically turn into a consumption app. You have to visit their website now and buy everything there and then sync your purchases in the Android app. Like Audible, there are now many hoops you have to jump through just to buy something. P.S. For the other end of the spectrum, check out these 15 terrific audiobooks you can listen to in 6(ish) hours or (much) less. I also recently shared my favorite listening experiences of 2018, and you can view all audiobook posts here.
My favorite long audiobook is Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Roughly sci-fi, on what might happen if the Earth were suddenly not livable, good science, good plot, well written. Another by Stephenson, Reamde, a high-tech global adventure story. I liked them so much, I listened twice!
If you haven't already, please sign the #Audiblegate petition here . We will keep you posted as the campaign develops. Now over to Colleen, to explain how audiobook authors and narrators are paid.
If instead you choose to sell your audio rights to an audiobook publisher, be aware they are also likely locked in to the ACX contract. Ask them about Audible terms before signing a contract. Also know that the publisher royalty rates are a percentage of a percentage. For example, a 30% royalty rate will be 30% times the ACX non-exclusive rate of 13%, which amounts to less than 4% of retail price. Whatever road you take, ensure you are fully informed. Do the math if you paid for the production yourself. How much quicker would you own the book and be making clear profit
Audible has two membership options. The classic one-credit-a-month plan, known as Audible Premium Plus, will let you choose a title in their library to keep and listen to any title they have. They also now have a cheaper option called Audible Plus, which is like a streaming service for audiobooks where you can listen to all you want a month at a time.
Audible is not free with an Amazon Prime membership. However, if you choose to get a free trial of Audible Premium Plus then you get to select 2 audiobooks to keep instead of just one!
With this section, you can create your own groups of audiobooks. This makes it really easy to keep track and listen to just what you want to at the right time. This makes finding books a lot easier, and sharing some of your favorites with others, too! I also really like that it makes it possible for me to split up the fiction and non-fiction books that I listen to.
All options include a 30-day free trial. If you get Premium Plus, that means you get one audiobook for free plus the ability to listen to all those Audible Originals and more. And if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you can even get two premium titles as part of a Premium Plus free trial!
For many Audible users, the new plan sounds like an exciting alternative to Gold membership, and many start to wonder whether to switch subscriptions. For half the price you get unlimited access to Audible audiobooks, right
How many audiobooks are available on Audible platform Last time Amazon displayed the exact number of items in specific categories (it ended in 2018), the Audible catalog included over 450,000 titles. As the platform is growing, I expect that number to reach or exceed 500,000.
How many audiobooks are included in Audible Plus catalog There are only some 11,000 titles here. And this may be the biggest disappointment of the new subscription. Audible is aware that this number is not stunning, so the company translates it into hours of listening: about 68,000. It sounds much better.
Before signing up for Audible Plus, you should check out the catalog of eligible audiobooks. The good news is that on Amazon you can explore Audible Plus catalog without being signed in to either Amazon or Audible.
Most titles available for free for Plus subscribers are original audiobook productions. You can find here Audible Originals, classic novels produced by Audible, documentaries, short-length audio publications, and popular podcasts.
Audible Gold subscribers know credits very well. You get one credit per month (if you had Platinum membership, you received 2 credits), and you can exchange it for any audiobook. In other words, you pay for audiobooks in credits you receive from your subscription.
All non-Plus audiobooks are now a part of the so-called Premium catalog. You can get them for credits if you are a Premium Plus subscriber, or you can buy them for a full price if you are not subscribed or subscribed to Plus plan.
To cut story short: it turns out audiobooks were removed from Prime Reading catalog. You can only access Kindle books with narration, but there are no fully-fledged audiobooks in the Prime Reading catalog any longer.
Gift-giving season is upon us again, and what better way to share a story with a loved one than by sending an audiobook Audiobooks are convenient, affordable, and versatile. But there are so many ways to gift audiobooks nowadays that the sheer number of options can be overwhelming.
There are two primary methods of gifting audiobooks. The first is the traditional way of sending an individual audiobook (à la carte), which has the advantage of being able to personalize your gift selection and tailor it to your recipient. The second way (and the most popular method) is through an audiobook subscription.
Let's start with the obvious one: Amazon's Audible. Audible is easily accessible through a number of devices, including the popular Alexa devices. There are a few ways to gift audiobooks from Amazon and Audible:
